Generosity

Read Aloud Books Related to Generosity that Parents and Teachers Can Read to their Children.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

A classic story about a boy and his aging relationship with a tree.    Readers have long had discussions about the true nature of the tree and of giving, but there is no doubt that gifts of generosity abound in the book.

Boxes for Katje by Candace Fleming

Katje lives in Holland in the aftermath of WW II.  Amidst the ruins of her town, she experiences the joys of springtime flowers on the same day that she receives an unsolicited gift from strangers in the United States.  The ensuing dialogue shared, between thank you letters and further gifts, helps two young girls experience the joys of generosity.

Thank you, Omu by Oge Mora

Omu cooks a delicious strew and feeds her town in Nigerian custom.  But will her generosity leave any stew for herself?  This is a great book about the cultural bases of generosity that allow children to see generosity as a universal human trait of shared significance.

Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts

Jeremy desperately wants “those shoes” that everyone else seems to have, but they are expensive and Grandma questions whether the family can afford them.  After searching for ways to afford the shoes, Jeremy begins to learn about needs versus wants and appreciate the true gifts of a loving Grandma, sturdy boots, and a true friend.  The theme of generosity of spirit and connection emanates throughout this book.

It’s Mine! by Leo Lionni

This is a beautiful picture book that helps younger children to deal with the tendency to claim possessions as “Mine”.  The story centers on three selfish frogs who each struggle with claiming ownership until a catastrophe demonstrates the power of friendship, generosity and sharing.
